(4/2/07) HandyMed Releases HandyCards/PoPC v5.3

HandyMed is proud to announce the arrival of HandyCards v5.3 on Windows Mobile v5 handhelds.  HandyCards is an elegant flashcard solution designed to optimize learning any subject on the go.  Finally, capitalize on those lost minutes while waiting in line at the grocery store, while riding a cab downtown, and while riding the bus home from school.  Whether you are reviewing French-English flashcards for undergraduate French class, studying images of human anatomy in medical school, learning to associate composers and their work by listening to song fragments for your undergraduate symphony class, or studying poker combinations for that upcoming trip to Las Vegas, HandyCards can do it all. A free trial version of HandyCards is available here:   http://www.HandyMed.com/HandyCards.

In addition to simple question-answer, true-false, and multiple choice testing, HandyCards supports advanced testing methods designed to make your learning experience more efficient and save time in the long run.  HandyCards can help you focus on those subjects which you don't know as well to refine your study sessions using any of the six algorithms, such as Leitner sorting, known to improve testing results.  Also, track your testing progress using the built-in testing statistics and export testing session results to monitor your progress.

While HandyCards focuses on learning on the go, you may want to test on a desktop or laptop computer.  That's why HandyMed has partnered with OpenWindow, makers of the full-featured desktop testing solution WinFlash Educator, to provide seamless integration between desktop and handheld testing.  Also, if friends have HandyCards running on their Palm, data files can be shared between devices to allow a group learning effort on studying material for the same class.

Updated features in this version not only include support of Windows Mobile v5 devices, but also adds significant improvements in program performance.  For instance, opening data files now is 3-5x faster, depending on file content.  Font and color support is improved with an improved font dialog and a broader color palette.

Current Users -- Upgrade:
Customers who purchased v5.0 or v5.1 of HandyCards are entitled to a free upgrade to v5.3.  Users who purchased other versions of HandyCards can obtain the new version by paying $14.95 to upgrade, which is a 25% discount from the full price of $19.95.  To upgrade, all existing users must uninstall HandyCards and delete the HandyCards directory prior to installing the new version.  The new version can be downloaded here:  http://www.HandyMed.com/HandyCards.

(7/11/04) HandyMed Releases HandyCards/PoPC v5.0

HandyCards v5.0 now represents the ultimate learning environment for the Pocket PC.  Regardless of what you want, HandyCards can do it.  Single-question, single-answer testing?  Can do it.  True/false or multiple-choice tests?  Can do that too.  Want even more, such as advanced testing algorithms?  HandyCards v5.0 can do this too.  HandyCards now has new testing modes, testing statistics, and an improved testing interface, all to make studying more efficient and enjoyable.

New features include:

All-New Testing Methods

  • Leitner Testing -- advanced learning methodology based on time-delayed exposure to questions, with increased focus on those areas which need more attention

  • Subset Testing -- force the program to grab cards in user-defined groupings and then advance to the next group on demand

  • Timed Testing -- rapid-fire testing with user-defined testing intervals

  • Unfamiliar Testing -- test those questions which have been answered below a user-defined percentile

  • Hidden-Answer Testing -- testing designed specifically for those working on conjugating verbs, where multiple-choice answers remain hidden until each individual answer has been tapped

  • Category Testing -- testing based on files containing different categories (e.g. addition, subtraction, division, etc.)

Testing Enhancements

  • Enhanced testing statistics

    • Single-card testing performance

    • Category testing performance

    • Graphical view of single-card performance

    • Export your testing statistics

  • User-defined hardware button support

  • Hints can be shown with each question; Comments can be shown after each question has been answered

  • Auto-rewind -- on reaching the end of a flashcard deck, the testing is automatically reset to the beginning and restarted without user intervention

  • Auto-score -- for true/false questions, or questions with two or more answers, HandyCards will automatically record whether the question was answered correctly or not (single-answer questions will still need to be manually scored)

  • Auto-advance – when a user indicates an answer was scored correctly or incorrectly, the testing automatically advances to the next question, thereby eliminating a click to advance to the next question.

  • Auto-save -- to preserve testing statistics, a flashcard set can be automatically saved on exiting the program or closing a flashcard set

  • Questions and answers can now have their own images, sounds, and movies. Supported formats include .jpg, .bmp, .2bp, .gif, .wav, .mp3, .wma, .wmv, and .asf.

  • Edit screen question style can now be maintained when making multiple flashcards to allow for rapid creation of numerous flashcards using the same style

  • Edit screen saving will no longer require closing a "Question Saved" message box multiple times

  • Colors -- user-defined text and background colors

  • Options -- now moved to Tools menu

  • Enhanced Question/Answer swapping -- choices are now ask question, ask answer, or randomly switch between asking question or answer

  • Full-screen single-answer testing to enhance readability

  • File menu now stores the last four data files for rapidly recalling recent testing files

  • File | New -- rapidly create a new data file, especially when a file is currently open, because it automatically closes the file

Current Users -- Upgrade:

(2/10/02) HandyMed Releases HandyCards/WinCE v4.1

HandyMed (www.HandyMed.com) is pleased to announce the release of HandyCards/WinCE v4.1.  This update of HandyCards is primarily designed for improved usability, but a couple bug minor bugs have also been corrected.  The following is a list of the new and/or updated features:

  • multiple answers now allowed for each question, which is useful for studying for tests such as the MCSE tests
  • single-answer flash cards (i.e. as opposed to true/false or multiple choice flash cards) can now be used to create multiple choice tests, because HandyCards automatically builds the multiple choice answers by selecting the incorrect answers from among other flash cards in the current data file. The power of the WindowsCE/PocketPC handheld allows this test creation to be completely transparent to the user.
  • tapping on question advances to the next question
  • tapping on any answer shows the correct answer
  • multiple choice answers can now be randomized to prevent learning answers simply by position
  • the color scheme of answers has been improved to clarify correct vs. incorrect responses
  • HandyCards's folder can now be named any name instead of the name created by the installation software

Bug fixes:

  • a couple bugs in Enter/Edit Screen search were fixed

Current Users -- Upgrade:

Customers who purchased HandyCards after June 1, 2001 are entitled to a free upgrade to v4.1.  Users who purchased the software prior to June 1, 2001 can obtain the new version either by paying $10 to upgrade or by submitting at least 150 flash cards to share with other HandyCards customers.  To upgrade, all existing users must uninstall HandyCards and delete the HandyCards directory prior to installing the new version.
